My Classic and Favorite Computer Games

I used to be a big computer game addict growing up. I remember sitting for hours by my computer playing, what I now call, classic computer games. When I use the term “classic”, I don’t mean Pac-man type games. In this blog post, “classic” will be defined as games that I liked playing and cause me to have a nostalgic moment.

By the way, but the time I was 20 years old, I gave up computer games for good as I believed that an adult’s time is better spent. Nevertheless, when I recall some of the classic games that I cherished, I get all fuzzy inside and I get this urge to install the games again.

Here are some of my favorite Classic Computer Games that I used to love to play:

Tropico

This game is great for anyone who secretly yearns to be a dictator of small tropical Island. You can be a benevolent leader who strives to make their Island a Caribbean paradise (boring). Alternatively, you can run your small country with an iron fist. What I loved to do (because I was sadistic) was to enlist a large army to impose martial law on the other citizens. I would ensure that political dissidents were rounded up and eliminated. Nothing was more enjoyable than watching a massive battle between my soldiers and the rebel army fight to the death. Good times…

StarCraft

I think many computer geeks like me who remember playing the original Starcarft will agree that this game is an iron-clad classic. For those of you who are less familiar with it (i.e. my wife) it’s a strategy game based in the future in some distant solar system. You choose between 3 races: the Terrans (humans), the Protass (bluish-green aliens), and Zerg (reddish purple aliens). What I loved about Starcaft is that even all 3 races were vastly different from each other, there was a balance to the game. I usually played as the Terrans because I like their units and I was sympathetic to their cause since I am also a human. My friend and I loved the online version of the game. As far as I remember, several years after the game came out, you could still find an online community playing the game.

Age of Empires II

This game, designed by Microsoft, makes an effort to introduce some history into the world of computer gaming. By the way, I am not writing about the first Age of Empires games because I think it was lamer than the 2nd one. Anyway, in Age of Empires II, you choose for one of the many medieval nations of the world and battle with the others. Each nation had its special units and skills. I would play one on one with my friend (I always won). The game had many unique features, like the way when you group up a bunch of soldiers and order them to go somewhere, they would automatically march in an organized formation.

Grand Theft Auto one, three, and four.

Did you ever have a desire to steal some car, evade the police, and run over some random pedestrians? If so, Grand Theft Auto (GTA) is the game for you. First of all, I deliberately left out GTA 2 and 5 in the title. I never played 5, and 2 was lame. Basically, you play as a dude in a city who can hijack cars, shoot people, and create general mayhem. If you follow the plot of the games, you work for various criminal organizations and gangs and you get paid to fulfill their missions. However there are also many bonus missions and activates.

I could write a long article on each of these games, but I have better things to do. Maybe in the near future I will write about some other computer games I played.
